Summer in Belize: Sustainable Development

Program Description

The Summer in Belize: Sustainable Development program examines how culture and the environment influence society’s responses to challenges of economic growth and eco-friendly development. Students examine everything from the building techniques and design concepts used by the ancient Maya culture including their monumental sites as well as home sites and forest gardening, to the Belizean adaptation of colonial architecture designs, to the more recent Maya-influenced buildings in Belmopan, the capital of Belize.

The program also explores the use of renewable energy such as solar, bio-fuels, hydro, and compost toilet systems. The overall goal of the program is to examine design and practices that restore the balance between the natural and man-made environment.
