Semester in Paris: French Language

Curriculum and Faculty

Most of your coursework while on this program is focused on language acquisition, including grammar and phonetics. Regardless of background, all students take a placement test at the beginning of the program which will place them into the appropriate level courses, given their language skills.

The Semester in Paris: French Language program is offered both in the Spring and Fall.
  • Fall Semester: 12 weeks: A2 - Language and Civilization plus one or two 3-credit courses from the Catholic University of Paris (14-17 credit hours)
  • Spring Semester: 12-weeks: T2 - Language and Civilization (12-15 credit hours)


Course Curriculum - Fall Semester

Students enrolled in the Fall Semester attend the A2 course curriculum at the Sorbonne (11 credits) and 1-2 courses from the Catholic University of Paris (3-6 credits).

Core Curriculum

Students take 120 hours of Language, 20 hours of Phonetics and 30 hours of Civilization lectures. For the Civilization lectures, 48 hours is considered the normal track. More highly motivated students may choose to take 72 hours of Civilization lectures. Only for exceptional cases will students be allowed to take 96 hours of Civilization lectures.

Students will be required by the ILCF to take an online placement exam to find their appropriate level of French: Beginner, Elementary (E1-3), Intermediate (I1-3), Advanced (A1-2) or Superior.
